Bahamas FAQ

If any of your questions are not answered on this page, please do not hesitate to email or phone us directly and we will be happy to answer further questions.

What currency do you use?
The Bahamian dollar is on par with the U.S. dollar. Both currencies are accepted on Long Island, and are practical to have in smaller denominations. North Long Island has one bank with limited hours of operation. Other than U.S. dollars, foreign currencies should be converted prior to your arrival. Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort accepts traveler’s cheques, Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Bahamian or U.S. cash for all resort purchases.
What do I need to enter the Bahamas?
The Bahamas Tourist Office has up-to-date information on their entry requirements web page. All visitors to the Bahamas must possess onward or return tickets and are required to pay a nominal Bahamian departure tax when they leave.
Where can I clear customs?
Customs clearance is at the Stella Maris International Airport on Long Island if you are arriving via Florida or private charter. If you travel via Nassau or George Town, you will clear customs there. Airport transfers to and from Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort are available and are your responsibility. Once you clear customs, taxicabs are available to bring you to the resort.
How’s the water?
The water at Cape Santa Maria is among the best in the Bahamas. Crystal clear water is drawn from a modern reverse osmosis system.
What type of fishing is available at the resort?
Bone fishing — we have three bone fishing boats and guides in addition to Bone Fish flats that are only steps away from our resort.
Reef fishing — we have three reef boats and guides. A great variety of Reef fish are available like Grouper, Snapper, Grunt Fish, Goat Fish, Yellowtail and many more. Upon request our kitchen will even prepare your catch for an evening meal for a nominal fee.
Deep sea fishing — we have a newly refitted 31 foot Bertram Sport Fisher with the latest gear and talented guides. We fish for Blue Marlin, Dorado (dolphin fish), Barracuda, King Fish, Yellow Tail Tuna, Sail Fish, Marlin, Wahoo and more!
Should I book my fishing trips prior to arriving at the resort?
It is a good idea to call or email the resort about two weeks before your trip. That way we can make sure you are booked on the day and the type of fishing you want. Phone us from within North America at 1-800-926-9704 or email resort@capesantamaria.com.
Can I bring my own rod, reel and tackle? Do you supply tackle?
You are welcome to bring your own gear. We do have rods, reels and tackle available to rent if you are fishing on your own. If you go out with a guide you can use your own gear or we will supply everything as part of the overall guided fishing package. Wading shoes are available to purchase or rent from the resort. Many folks prefer to bring their own.
What time of year is the fishing the best?
There is great bone fishing, reef fishing and deep sea fishing year round. The fishing (like anywhere) is somewhat dependant on weather and tides.
May and June are prime Dorado season, November and December are excellent for bill fish. Other than that, most species can be caught year around. Like they say, it’s about being in the right place at the right time!
What do most people say is the best thing about your resort?
The beach! Our beach is widely considered to be one of the finest beaches in the Bahamas. The water is clear, clean, and warm. The four-mile long beach is pure sand and free of coral or rocks. You can wade out 50 feet and you are only waist deep. A barrier reef protects the beach from large waves and is very safe for small children and adults alike. And, there are no jellyfish or sea urchins in the safe and tranquil waters.
The staff — we receive comments every day on how helpful and friendly our staff are. Our staff are all from surrounding communities and take great pride in making our guests feel welcome and comfortable. We think you’ll be very impressed.
What are the bungalows like?
Bungalows consist of two units. Each one is facing the beach and only a few steps away from the sand. Bungalows have a patio area with table and chairs to watch the golden sunsets directly in front. Bungalows have two queen beds, and many have adjoining side rooms with two twin beds — ideal for families.
What other activities are available at the resort?
Besides relaxing on the beach or having a cocktail on your patio there are many other activities to entertain you. How about…

  • Scuba diving
  • Hobie Cat sailing
  • Kayaking — free for our guests
  • Bicycles — free for our guests
  • Snorkeling
  • Nature cruises
  • Rent a car — we can arrange a vehicle to be delivered right to the resort
  • Just take a beautiful walk down our four mile white sand beach!
What should I bring?
The weather is warm year round so shorts are always a must. During the winter months you may want to bring a sweater as it sometimes gets a little cooler in the evening. The temperature fluctuates from a low of 70 in the winter to a high of mid 90’s in the summer. We are considerably warmer than Florida in the winter months.
Do you have larger accommodation for two families?
Yes! We have just completed 16 of 48 beach-front villas that are fully furnished with everything from complete kitchens, washer/dryer to satellite TV and Internet. Two large bedrooms and a sofa couch in the living room along with two full baths makes these ideal units for two families.
